A museum to display a unique collection of superior quality driftwood sculptures of very high artistic value,
prepared through a rare and innovative modern art form, is functioning at Chakranpadi, Kumarakom North.
It has a huge collection of driftwood structures of various shapes and designs. During her professional
tenure in the Andaman archipelago, a dynamic lady school teacher used to pick up pieces of driftwood
deposited by the sea on the shores comprising twisted tree trunks stumps, roots etc. which had the
potential to be made into sculptures with marginal efforts. Many of these wooden parts were centuries
old and having driftwood across the seas, they became more resilient. The picked up pieces were cleansed,
dead parts removed, scraped and trimmed to conform to the shape she had in mind.
The sanctuary is located at Kavanattinkara, in the north-western part of Kumarakom. The area becomes a
transit location for migratory birds, between November and March every year. It becomes a winter home for
them during this period. It is preferable to visit the sanctuary on foot along the 1 km long walking track. One
may spot Siberian cranes, wood beetles, storks, teals, darters, egrets and herons along this route. Two sides
of the sanctuary are surrounded by water. Waterfowls, ducks etc. and birds like the cuckoo, kingfishers,
larks, parrots and fly catchers may be viewed if a boat ride is undertaken. May to July is the breeding season
for local species of birds like pond herons, egrets, and Indian shag. This is the first scientifically preserved
bird’s sanctuary in India with about 180 species of birds. The existence of the sanctuary owes much to its
location and the nature of climatic elements experienced.
Vembanad Lake is bordering the Kumarakom Village on the western side. The lake is the largest
among more than half-a-dozen lakes in Kerala State and also the longest in the country. Three rivers
which originates from the hilly region of the State finally discharge themselves to this lake (also
known as kayal). The proximity of the lake is also a reason for the advent of the migratory birds to
Kumarakom. Boating and fishing are borne in their minds by the tourists as soon as this location is
selected for tour. House boats, Motor Boats and Speed Boats are available for hire at several places
of the village and charges depend on the type and capacity of the water craft and the duration of the
proposed cruise in the lake.
Flocks of birds flying across the lake during the early hours of the day is an interesting sight. One
may find migratory birds in large numbers skimming in the lake water in search of fish. The lake is
infested with marine creatures abundantly. It is not advisable to undertake a kayal cruise during
the monsoon season (June-Sept) with inclement weather conditions.
It has been built across Lake Vembanad. It connects Vechoor of Vaikom taluk of Kottayam district and
Thanneermukkom of Cherthala taluk Alappuzha district. It can be reached by road, from Kottayam town,
Alapuzha or Cherthala. The Thanneermukkom Bund (Thannermukkom Salt Water Barrier) was constructed
as a part of the Kuttanad Development Scheme to prevent tidal action and intrusion of salt water into the
Kuttanad low-lands across Vembanad Lake between Thannermukkom on south and Vechur on north.
Thanneermukkom Bund was constructed in 1974 and is functional since 1976. It is the largest mud regulator
in India. This barrier essentially divides the lake into two parts – one with brackish water perennially and the
other half with fresh water fed by the rivers draining into the lake.
Pathiramanal is a small island in Muhamma panchayat of Alappuzha district . The name Pathiramanal
means ‘sands of night’. The scenic beauty of both sides of the lake as well as that of the island is
mind blowing. It is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world
The Pathiramanal Island is 28.505 ha… It is about 1.5 km from Muhamma boat jetty and about 13
km from Alapuzha. From the jetty close by Baker Bungalow the distance to the island is about 5
km and from Kumarakom 4 km towards northw The island (also known as Anantha Padmanabhan
Thoppu) was purchased by Chevalier ACM Anthraper, from M/s Bheemji Devji Trust of Cochin and
was under the private ownership of Thaimattathil Family until the late seventies. In 1979 after Land
Reforms Acts were enforced in the State, the property came under government ownership.
The island was returned to the government as a surplus land that crossed the land ceiling. It was
later transferred to the Tourism Department and the idea of leasing it out to private enterprises was
under consideration. The island at present is uninhabited. Till late seventies of the 20th century 14
worker families resided in the island, who were later rehabilitated on the mainland in the Muhamma
panchayath. The island is located in the Vembanad Lake. It is at 9°36′54″N 76°23′1″E. The island
is an hour and half drive by motor boat or 30 minutes by speed boat from Alappuzha town. One can
also take the boats plying in the Muhamma-Kumarakom water route. The SWTD boats plying in the
Muhamma-Kumarakom water route no longer stops at Pathiramanal. It takes around 40 minutes
from Kumarakom to reach Pathiramanal. The journey through Vembanad Lake is a marvellous
experience.
