La Garde Freinet Fort Freinet is an old fortified village from the late twelfth century,
perched on a rocky mountain overlooking the current village of La Garde Freinet. The
Fort Freinet is registered as an ‘environmentally exceptional’ site.
At the top of Fort Freinet (450m) you can marvel at the panoramic views from the
Mediterranean Sea to the Alps. To make it fit to live in roughly thirty houses, lots of steps,
a chapel and a moat were cut into the rock face.
The moat surrounding the fort is 8-10 meters deep and entirely cut into the rock. The trail
up the mountain is signposted, take some water and wear some walking shoes, the views
from the top are not to be missed!
Restaurant Chateu des Launes, also in La Garde-Freinet, is located in a beautiful chateau
with stunning views from the terrace – a lovely spot for lunch and a glass of rosé.
